Committees
Senior & Junior Youth
Mission Statement:  To develop a commitment to Christ and provide an atmosphere, through fellowship and Bible Study, that fosters spiritual growth, develops integrity and builds spiritual leadership.
Lutheran Church of the Ascension has a well-rounded youth program that gives our youth opportunity to serve, learn, and play.  Both our Junior Youth and our Senior Youth groups enjoy music and Bible studies.  Five of our Senior High youth participated in The National ELCA Youth Gathering in San Antonio, TX July 5-9, 2006.
Our youth also have a variety of service projects. The Junior Youth serve at Life & Growth's VIP luncheons (for seniors fifty-five years and older).  For several years, our Senior Youth have traveled to Mexico to serve on a mission team.  They have also participated in Sacramento's Loaves & Fishes for the homeless and the Service Blitz that happens during the Super Bowl for Hunger in February.
The youth regularly participate in snow trips, camping, swim parties, picnics, lock-ins, concerts, and a whole lot more!  In addition to these fellowship opportunities, Ascension Lutheran Church offers weekly Bible study
Life & Growth

Members of our Life & Growth Committee plan a variety of fellowship opportunities for our Church family.

Lutheran Church of Ascension's WELCA (Women of the ELCA) group hosts several circles for Bible study and fellowship as well as quarterly general meetings and mission projects, including stitching quilts for the needy.

Ruth and Eve Circles meet once per month for friendship, good desserts, and a concentrated study of one book of the Bible as found in Lutheran Woman Today magazine. These groups each took the name of a Biblical woman and the Ruth Circle meets the second Wednesday of each month at 1:00pm. The Eve Circle meets the third Tuesday at 7:15pm. Give our circles a try! You'll like it.

Many activities that our committee sponsors vary from month-to-month and year-to-year but include events such as theatre, living wall, directory, Dance for Joy Celebration (honoring all adults), Father/daughter luncheons and fashion shows, Mother/Son luncheons, summer BBQ (different theme each year), Variety Show, coffee hours after each service, Sock Hops, 40+ Active Group, WELCA and a variety of Small Groups to fit your needs and much more to choose from. We welcome ALL people to faith in Jesus Christ. Hope to see you there!

Properties

Our Properties Committee is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of our Church and grounds.
Our Properties Committee sponsors work days throughout the year to give our members the opportunity to tackle some of the larger routine cleaning and maintenance jobs that need attention from time to time.
Members of our Property Committee are also skilled at fine carpentry and often plan and build specialty items for our church.
We are blessed to have dedicated and skilled volunteers to manage our church facilities.

Social Ministry

Lutheran Church of the Ascension provides a caring ministry to bring God’s Love to those in need through its social ministry activities.  These programs offer assistance to our brothers and sisters in Citrus Heights, the Greater Sacramento Area and around the world.  The following are ongoing programs we support.

  • Members of Ascension serve meals at Loaves and Fishes, a ministry for the homeless and hungry in Sacramento.
  • Funds are collected annually to buy student supplies and nutritious snacks for the Mustard Seed School which provides a caring and structured environment for homeless children.
  • Ascension collects clothing and delivers it to WIND, a non-profit organization that supports high-risk and homeless teens.
  • Monthly worship services are led by congregation members at Mission Carmichael in Carmichael and Manor Care in Citrus Heights, facilities for the elderly and those in rehabilitation from surgery or illness.
  • Ascension youth perform service projects and collect funds to alleviate hunger and poverty for the Souper Bowl of Caring held on Super Bowl weekend.
  • Our tape ministry program distributes cassette tapes of worship services to those unable to attend services in person.
  • Ascension members write letters to their Congressional representatives urging support for federal programs that benefit hungry and poor people.

For more information about the Social Ministry Committee and its programs contact Rich Peterson at (916) 773-5478.

Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry is: our Christ centered one on one, confidential, caring, lay ministry for members and friends of Lutheran Church of the Ascension and the community.

Holy Scripture tells us that in order to help fulfill the law of Christ we are to "Bear one another's burdens." (Gal 6:2) thus, Ascension began its association with Stephen Ministry of St. Louis, MO in October of 1991. At that time, as now, the goal of our congregation was to become more supportive and caring of people in need, both within the church and in the surrounding community.

A Stephen Minister's primary objective is to bring God's love and forgiveness to our assigned Care Receivers through weekly visits.
We are not professional counselors. Instead we listen with open hearts and minds as we share in the journeys of our brothers and sisters in Christ. That which is shared in confidence, stays confidential. Our strength comes from knowing that, although we may be the care giver, God is ultimately the CURE giver. While parishioners with critical and immediate needs are visited often by a pastor, this is usually not possible over an extended period of time. Crisis may arise for the hospitalized, terminally ill, grieving, elderly, disabled, or those struggling with unresolved spiritual issues.
For further information, contact Cynthia Hannem in the church office or cindy@luthchurch.org.
Worship and Music
The Worship and Music committee works with the pastor's to ensure that our worship services promote the Word of God and the Sacrament in a reverent, orderly manner. In addition to Sunday morning services, we provide occasional special services such as quarterly Healing services. Our committee provides many ways to participate in our worship services:
  • altar guild
  • musicians
  • ushers
  • communion assistants
  • choirs
  • liturgists
  • special music
  • lay readers

In addition, we provide bulletins, children's bulletins and flowers each Sunday.

Stewardship
The Stewardship Committee's primary responsibility is to plan, initiate and promote an on-going program of sound Christian stewardship. The stewardship program educates and encourages congregational awareness and growth in giving of one's time, talent, abilities, and gifts.
Evangelism
The Evangelism ministry at Ascension Lutheran Church seeks to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Our goal is to win new and renewed commitments to Christ from our members and from those who we reach in the community through our outreach activities and presence at community events.
Evangelism opportunities for service include the Sunday Greeter program, our New Member Sponsor program, contacting and calling on visitors and prospective as well as inactive members, the orientation and reception of New Members, and other Evangelism education and outreach project throughout the year.
