From 1960 to Today, Ascension has a History of Service
Ascension had its beginning when Rev. Russell Osnes, and his wife Ardelle, moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in August of 1960. They remained with us until October 1969.

The first service was held in the Citrus Heights Lions Club Scout Lodge, on Community Drive, on Sunday, September 18, with 35 people in attendance. On February 12, 1961, the laying of the church's cornerstone was observed at the site of our present facility. The attendance at Ascension grew with each passing year. In 1965 the congregation had 97 families and 390 souls. The Sunday School had grown to 250 children which made it necessary to add an education wing. |
Our second pastor, Rev. Albert Tietz, was installed on October 12, 1969. He delivered his farewell address on January 20, 1974.
This was a time when our church and the Sacramento area suffered a financial setback which resulted in our inability to provide for a full time pastor. Rev. James Berner came to our rescue on a part-time basis. He faithfully filled our pulpit from January 27, 1974 until May 31, 1981.

June 14, 1981 marked the return of full time ministry to Ascension with the installation of Rev. Robert Stroud. He and his wife Delores came to us from Luther Northwestern Seminary in Minnesota.
Ascension Christian Preschool opened in September 1982 and has been in continuous operation since then. Morning preschool classes are offered for children ages two and a half to five, along with limited afternoon day care.

Ascension reached a banner year in 1984 with attendance averaging 200 people each Sunday. This made it necessary to begin a building program to provide the additional space so desperately needed. On February 9, 1986, we dedicated our new education and administrative facilities to God.
In April 1985 Ascension celebrated its 25th anniversary to the Glory of God.
On October 26, 1986, Pastor Stroud left Ascension to begin a new career as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force
Rev. Michael Murphy accepted our call and was installed on January 25, 1987. Pastor Murphy and his wife Lonnie came to us from Saint Mark Lutheran Church in Fairfield Ca.

The 1990s resulted in many changes as the congregation grew from a small church to a “Mid-sized church.” Many programs and various ministries began. With worship, administration and educational facilities stretched to the breaking point, we entered into a major building program in October 1997. In December of 1999 we dedicated a beautiful new sanctuary to our Lord and, in addition, we also expanded, updated and remodeled existing facilities while adding a new parking lot and extensive new landscaping. The artwork of stained glass images of the Old Testament is very beautiful along the left wall. Along the right wall the New Testament is featured in stained glass as well. Directly above the altar is a beautiful, large stained glass cross. We also added a peaceful and beautiful biblical garden (containing the various foliage, flowers and fruits found in the bible) which offers opportunities for meditation and reflection on the scriptures throughout the garden. Other outdoor chapels and meditation spots were also incorporated throughout our gardens. In 2001 we expanded and remodeled the old sanctuary providing an additional, much needed conference room, a prayer chapel, and more offices.

By 2007, with average weekly Sunday morning worship attendance exceeding 350, and with our facilities again stretched, the congregation voted to call a second pastor and to begin preliminary work for another new and major building program to significantly expand and to make more functional our school, youth and educational facilities.
On July 8, 2007, after accepting our call, Pastor Allen Dunn was installed as our second pastor. He and his wife Linda already resided in this area where Doctor Dunn was serving as mission developer and in interim pastoral ministries.
