Pastor Scott Jones was born, raised and met his wife, Robin, in the Sacramento area. He grew up as a farm kid (Wilton), worshipping at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Elk Grove. After attending and working at Mt. Cross, Pr. Scott decided to attend college in the Santa Cruz Mountains (UC Santa Cruz). After graduation Pr. Scott remained on college campuses for another thirteen years working in contract food service management at UC Davis, Santa Rosa Jr. College, UC Santa Cruz and UNLV.
When Pr. Scott sensed a call to ministry he and his family moved to Chicago, where he attended North Park Theological Seminary. Pr. Scott served Evangelical Covenant Churches in Chicago, IL and Cromwell, CT before being called back to his theological and geographical roots as Lead Pastor at Lutheran Church of the Ascension.
In addition to being a San Francisco Giants fan, Pr. Scott is very fond of coffee (black) and chocolate (without coconut). Pr. Scott enjoys spending time with his family, going out to eat, trips to the coast and watching the Giants in the Pacific Standard Time zone.
Susie Van Vliet came to Ascension Lutheran Church through Ascension Christian Preschool, where she had enrolled their three children. After joining Ascension, she joined the preschool board serving as their treasurer. From there she was asked to be the chairperson, serving on the church council.
In 2006 the parish assistant position opened up and she was offered the job, which she gladly accepted. As the parish assistant, she sees to the day-to-day management of the church, she finds meaningful places of service for the volunteers, and she helps in the design and implementation of Ascension's programs and ministries.
She and her family enjoy family trips to Tahoe and weekend trips to the lake to go boating and jet skiing. As most families they are incredibly busy with school activities, homework and after school sports.
Kim Hunt was born and raised in Sacramento, CA. She has always been told that when her parents moved here from San Diego, that her dad found a church before looking for a home. That church was Grace Lutheran in Rancho Cordova. She was baptized, had her first Communion, was confirmed, President of Luther League, and a Choir member, on Council and worked at their preschool for over three years, which was her first job working with children.
Kim attended American River College and received an AA Degree in Early Childhood Education. In 1985, against the advice of her father and her pastor, she started a new job in Elk Grove at Sheldon Acres Preschool. Kim was their only employee with one child, and 13 years later, Kim left as the director with 17 staff, 160 children and two centers. She attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Church for several years while singing in their choir.
In 1997, she moved back to Sacramento and started working in Rocklin as a director of a center. She soon became a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer and joined their choir. She also worked in Rocklin for 13 years, and during that time earned a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development from Sacramento State University. The Lord brought her to Ascension Preschool in June 2015. At this point in her life, she feels this is where she belongs. Kim says, "What a joy and blessing it is for me to combine my passion of working with children with my faith and vocation on a daily basis as the Director of Ascension Christian Preschool."
My name is Justin Carballar, I have been attending Ascension since I was 6 years old. I grew up here, and when I was 18 I attended a year studying the Bible at Lutheran Bible Institute in Irvine, CA. The next year I came back to Ascension and started helping with the youth group as a volunteer. In 2008, God blessed me and called me to be the Assistant youth director here at Ascension. I love working with kids of all ages and sharing the love of Jesus that he freely gives to me. I am excited to teach the kids about being a part of God’s Family here at Ascension.
